How/ Why is America called the "land of the free"?

The reason how they got the name the land of the free is because they beat out england in the Revolutionary War in the mid 1700's. the reason why they are called this is that you could be from any ethnic group here, could choose your own religion and can claim their rights. why did you type all this? all I read was the question
