What are the negative and positive consequences of stereotyping groups?

E.g. the widespread stereotypes of Blacks, Muslims, Americans, Mexicans, Christians, Atheists, Politicians, Conservatives, Liberals, etc. On balance, is stereotyping more destructive than useful, or vise versa?
